Holly E. Martin, Ph.D.

Advising Professor
College of Arts and Letters

 

Dr. Martin is an advisor for first-year students who intend to pursue a major in the College of Arts & Letters. She holds the rank of Advising Professor and works with students exploring all majors. She has particular expertise in working with student-athletes and honors students.

 

Prior to joining the College of Arts & Letters advising team, Dr. Martin was the Associate Dean for Advising and Academic Programs in what was then the College of the First Year of Studies. A winner of the University’s Dockweiller Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising, she specializes in advising theory and practice, engaged learning strategies, and intensive academic advising practices.

 

Dr. Martin is active in NACADA (the leading organization in professional advising) as a Publications Advisory Board member and as an Editorial Advisory Board member for Academic Advising Today. She is also the past chair of NACADA’s Advising First-Year Students Interest Group. Additionally, she is a member of the Advisory Board for the Journal of Academic Advising, University of Indiana, Bloomington.

 

Dr. Martin recently co-edited the book Academic Advising and the First Year of College. She has also published on advising core competencies, advising learning outcomes, creating and using advising e-portfolios, integrative advising and student-athletes, career advising, and practices for engaging students in advising.

 

In addition to advising and scholarship, Dr. Martin has been the chair of the biannual National Conference on Advising Highly Talented Undergraduates (2010-2018) and directed both the First Year of Studies' advising e-portfolio program as well as its advising assessment survey initiative (2014-2019)

 

Dr. Martin earned her B.A. in history and literature from St. Olaf College and her M.A. and Ph.D. in literature from Notre Dame. Her areas of special interest and expertise are American, British, and Irish drama as well as interdisciplinary and cross-cultural arts, and she has recently taught classes such as “Global Arts and Identity,”  “Shakespeare: Plays Within Plays,” and the Glynn Family Honors Program two semester Honors Seminar.
