History & Future Development: South Bend Heritage Center (The Natatorium)
The Natatorium was a stop on the bus tour Lauren and I went on during our summer session with the Balfour Hesburgh Scholars Program. We we not able to stop last time, but getting the chance to explore the grounds was really amazing. The public-pool-turned-heritage-center features a quote from Dr. King (which we could barely see because of the snow) and some pretty cool architecture that was both welcoming and really caught our eyes.
At one point, the pool was open to "whites-only" six days a week. One day a week the African American community of South Bend was allowed to swim there, but at the end of the day the pool was drained before being re-opened for the white population. I really admire IUSB for taking this historic symbol of oppression and turning it into a house of hope, acceptance, and heritage.
