Step by Step Instructions Below

1. Login. Tip: The Firefox browser is recommended as the best browser to use while working on your eportfolio.  It is also suggested that you might want to open a new window or print out these instructions so that you can follow along. Login into your ND Gmail, click on the "More" button, then click on "Digication." Or, you can go to eportfolio.nd.edu and login by entering your net ID and password (same as your Gmail username and password).

2. Enter your advisor's course. To create your advising eportfolio, click on your advisor’s name under “My Courses.” Please make sure you build your eportfolio from this spot inside your advisor's course.  This is essential to creating an advising eportfolio.

3. Create your eportfolio from the template in your advisor's course. From there you’ll click on the "e-Portfolio" tab at the top of the page, and then click on “Create e-Portfolio from Template.” Please make sure you use the template provided inside your advisor's course.  This, too, is essential.

a). Give your eportfolio a simple title for use as your official advising portfolio. Something like “Jane Doe’s First Year Advising ePortfolio.”

b). You won’t need to choose a “Theme.” Your eportfolio should default to the ND theme for its header.

c). Next go to “Customize Permissions” and choose “Private to me.” You can change this later if you wish, but for now choose this setting.

d). Under the "Tag" section for the moment, choose “Do not allow Tags.” You may change this later if you would like.

    e) Then click on “Create New e-Portfolio.”*

4. Edit your Home page. You should now be on the Home page of your advising eportfolio.  You will briefly introduce yourself to your advisor by adding a picture (making sure you click on the Edit tab first) and an introductory paragraph about yourself.  To add your picture

   a) Delete the leprechaun,

   b) Click on the Insert Media button on the tool bar,

   c) Click on the Browse Media button that will appear in a gray box,

   d) Choose an appropriate picture, then click on the Insert button in the same box.

5. To Save and Publish your changes. Delete the Home page template instructions; then click on the "Save" button. After you have saved the page, click on the "Publish" tab above, and then click on the "Publish Changes" button to save your work on your Home page. (Sometimes it looks like nothing happens when you do this, but if you click on the "View Text" tab you will see that you did save the changes.)

 6. Submit this first assignment to your academic advisor. Go to your "Portfolio Tools" tab at the top right of your Home page and click on "Submit." You will then follow the directions on the four tabs at the top of the submit page. (It's a lot easier than it sounds.) See also How do I submit an assignment to my advisor?

Recommended Optional Actions:

[] Check out some student examples from last year.

[] Learn more about eportfolios and why they are beneficial to you.

[] Personalize and customize your eportfolio by using Beyond the Basics.

[] Browse the FYS Advising ePortfolio Resources website for more information, resources, and support.

Support:

Some of you won’t need any support and will figure this out; it is very intuitive. Some of you will be ready after reviewing this 2 page Quick Start Guide or reading this 22 page handbook. Some of you may prefer to play this 15 minute YouTube video demo or this 1 hour recorded webinar presentation in one browser window while you build your own in another window. If you get snagged along the way be sure to check out our Help  page. Tip: You can’t really break anything, and you can always make new eportfolios, so experiment and play around with the tool and have fun.

*You will notice that “eportfolio” is spelled a number of different ways. This is because until very recently the spelling of the word was fluid. The now accepted spelling of the word is “ePortfolio” when it begins a sentence or is in a title. When the word is used in the middle of a sentence it is spelled “eportfolio” without capitalization or hyphens.
