Network and Support

To achieve the things you want to achieve while you’re at ND, you’ll need to understand and take advantage of the ND support system. The questions below will help you inventory your use of University support systems and your networking skills.

Consider adding and beginning to develop your own resource page on your eportfolio.

1. Who are your academic advisor/advisors?

Do you know any of them well enough to ask for and receive a letter of recommendation? Do you know one or more professors (not necessarily in your likely major) well enough to ask for a letter of recommendation? Make a list of the advisors and professors who know you fairly well. Be sure to include their email and/or office and phone numbers.

(Information on phone numbers and office numbers can be found in the University Directory in the University Resources link on the left.)

2. Do you know where the office is of the department you are likely to major in?

Do you know who the Director of Undergraduate Studies is in your likely major?

The Director of Undergraduate Studies (the DUS) is the lead advisor for the undergraduates in that department.  It would be a good idea to add the department office's address and the DUS's name and email to your own resource page.

(Information on the various colleges and departments can be found in the University Resources link to the left.)

3. Have you explored the webpage of your likely major to investigate possible opportunities you might want to prepare for, such as internships, research opportunities, conferences, etc.? You may want to link those webpages to your resource page.

4. Do you know where to go to receive help with your writing?

See your professors and/or the Writing Center in Coleman-Morse. You may want to include a link to the Writing Center on your resource page.

(Information on the Writing Center can be found in the University Resources link to the left.)

5. Do you know what academic supports your college (the First Year of Studies) and your courses are offering (tutoring, learning centers, review sessions, professors' office hours, etc.)? You may want to include a link to FYS resources on your own eportfolio resources page.

(Information on the FYS resources can be found in the University Resources link to the left.)

6. Do you know where to get career planning and internship information?

Begin with the Career Center in Flanner Hall. Have an initial meeting with someone in the Career Center and through the DUS in your likely major to find out more about internships and other major-specific opportunities. You may want to add a link to the Career Center on your own resource page.

(Information on the Career Center can be found in the University Resources link to the left).

7. Do you know where to go for assistance for learning disabilities?

Begin by talking with Mr. Howland in the Sara Bea Learning Center.

(Information on the Sara Bea Learning Center can be found in the University Resources link to the left).

8. Do you know where to go to get information on and help putting together research proposals and where to apply for grant money for those projects? Start by contacting the First Year Librarians and taking a look at the CUSE website.

(Information on the First Year Librarians and CUSE can be found in the University Resources link on the left).

9. Do you know how to look up University faculty, staff and departments on the online directory so that you can request a meeting?

(Information on Directory Services is found on the University Resources link on the left).

10. Do you have a system for organizing your support network instead of or in addition to developing your own resource page on your eportfolio? Do you use your cell phone for example?
