The First Year of Studies Advising ePortfolio Resources

The FYS advising ePortfolio resources are intended to assist you in building your first-year advising ePortfolio.

Building an ePortfolio offers you a means of working closely with your academic advisors to plan your career at Notre Dame. The ePortfolio can help you strategize about how to make the most of your time here. You can explore opportunities and set goals concerning what you want out of your undergraduate years, as well as plan strategies for making use of the resources ND offers to achieve those goals. This advising ePortfolio can easily be copied or converted into a showcase eportfolio (a digital multi-media resume) that you can use to apply for study abroad, grants, internships, graduate school, and your first jobs.

Building your advising ePortfolio will involve three assignments. Each will take less than 20 minutes to complete, and you will receive an email to prompt you to complete each one. The timing of the assignments is as follows: 1) now, to create your ePortfolio and introduce yourself to your advisor, 2) at the end of the first semester to make mid-year adjustments and plans, and 3) towards the end of the spring semester to wrap up the year. The assignments are described in more detail below, and there is a FYS Advising ePortfolio Resources website that provides additional information, resources, and support.

Advising Assignments

Each assignment need not take more than 15 to 20 minutes to complete, although you are encouraged to take more time and to use the Advising ePortfolio Resources  link to help you brainstorm and develop these assignments.

Assignment #1: Initial Thoughts

Due: July 2013

Your first assignment is to create your ePortfolio and to introduce yourself to your advisor by completing the "Initial Thoughts" prompts in your ePortfolio. Directions for doing so will be emailed to you and are on the Help link.

Assignment #2: Mid-year Adjustments & Plans

Due: January 2014

Your second assignment is to answer the "Mid-year Adjustment and Plans" questions in your eportfolio so that you can decide how you would like to move forward with the second semester and college declaration you will make during the second semester.

Assignment #3: Second Semester Wrap up

Due: May 2014

The final assignment is to complete the five questions in the "Second Semester Wrap Up" page of your eportfolio so that you will be ready to work with your sophomore-year advisors and plan next semester's courses and activities.

Optional

Throughout the first year you are also encouraged, but not required, to participate in the Dean's A List .

Beyond the First Year

You will want to continue to update your ePortfolio during your sophomore, junior, and senior years so that your future advisors can use it in conversation with you and so that it will be ready to be converted into a showcase portfolio whenever you apply for internships, grants, study abroad opportunities, or jobs.
