Self-Managed and Lifelong Learning

The idea of life-long learning is that learning takes place inside and outside of classes, and it doesn’t end when your formal education ends. Your future advisors, admission committees, and employers will want to know that you are intellectually self-motivated and self-managed.

Think about about you might improve your skills and explore new areas of interest without having someone direct you. Think about which of the following you might like to mention in your responses to questions about your future planning and/or in your Home page:

1. What skills do you want to develop during or after your undergraduate education (languages, computer skills, etc.)?

2. What books would you like to read when you have time? (Start keeping a list.)

3. Are there films you want to see? (Start keeping a list)

4. Would you like to know more about jazz, classical, or world music? How will you go about doing that?

5. Are there activities you want to learn such as rock climbing, horseback riding, playing the piano, painting, etc.?

6. Are there countries or cultures you'd like to know more about? How might this relate to your academic plans and extracurricular activities?

7. Are there areas of study you've become interested in that you won't have time to major in at ND? How might you continue to pursue that interest?

8. What skills do you want to develop here and/or after you graduate from ND?
a. Academic skills such as . . .?
b. Leadership skills such as . . .?
c. Communication skills such as. . . ?
d. Organizational skills such as . . . ?
e. Creative and artistic skills such as . . . ?

Think about what you want to know, what you want to learn, and who you want to be to build your life-long learning lists.
