Holly E. Martin, Ph.D.

Advising Professor

College of Arts & Letters

 

Dr. Martin is an advisor for first-year students who intend to pursue a major in the College of Arts & Letters. She holds the rank of Advising Professor. Previous to joining the College of Arts & Letters advising team, Dr. Martin was the Associate Dean for Advising and Academic Programs in the College of the First Year of Studies. She works with students exploring all majors and has particular expertise in working with student-athletes and honors students.

 

A winner of the University’s Dockweiller Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising, she specializes in advising theory and practice, engaged learning strategies, and intensive academic advising practices. Dr. Martin is active in the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) as a publications advisory board member and an editorial advisory review member. She is the past chair of NACADA’s Advising First-Year Students Interest Group. Additionally, she is a member of the Indiana University, Bloomington, Journal of Academic Advising, Advisory Board.

 

Dr. Martin recently co-edited the book Academic Advising and the First Year of College for NACADA and the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. She has also published on advising core competencies, advising learning outcomes, creating and using advising e-portfolios, integrative advising and student-athletes, and practices for engaging students in advising.

 

In addition to extensive work in advising first-year student-athletes, students in the Glynn Family Honors Program, Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars, and other merit scholars programs, Dr. Martin has been the chair of the biannual National Conference on Advising Highly Talented Undergraduates and directed both the First Year of Studies' advising ePortfolio progam and its advising satisfaction survey initiative.

 

Dr. Martin earned her B.A. in history and literature from St. Olaf College and her M.A. and Ph.D. in literature from Notre Dame. Her areas of special interest and expertise are American, British, and Irish drama as well as interdisciplinary and cross-cultural arts, and she has recently taught classes such as “Global Arts and Identity,”  “Shakespeare: Plays Within Plays,” and the Glynn Family Honors Seminar.
