Laura Flynn
Academic Advisor
Faculty Rank: Associate Professional Specialist

 

Laura Flynn is an academic advisor in the University of Notre Dame’s First Year of Studies (FYS) and holds the rank of associate professional specialist. She works mainly with students interested in pursuing a major in one of the STEM disciplines, and she has a particular interest in STEM retention.  Flynn is the FYS liaison to the College of Science and an instructor for the Moreau First Year Experience course.

 

Flynn first joined the FYS faculty in 2000, serving as an academic advisor as well as director of the Peer Advising Program. In addition, she participated in writing and reviewing the First Year of Studies Academic Guide and helped lead focus groups of students to assess the effectiveness of FYS programs.

 

After six years in FYS, Flynn spent the next seven as assistant/associate director in Notre Dame’s Career Center, where she was responsible for the Science and Engineering Career Programs. Among other duties, she produced quarterly career newsletters for science and engineering students, taught the “Career Choices for Engineers” seminar, collaborated with alumni, employers, and faculty to plan and coordinate the Senior Transition workshops, and planned and organized all facets of the annual Engineering Industry Day.

 

Flynn holds a B.S. in chemistry from Saint Mary’s College and an M.B.A. from Indiana University South Bend. She worked at the Ames Division of Miles Laboratories (now Bayer Corporation) for nine years prior to coming to Notre Dame.
