As a faculty member in the First Year of Studies (FYS), Flynn has a number of responsibilities beyond providing one-on-one advising to her students. These activities are meant to enhance the experience of Notre Dame undergraduates as well as the practice of academic advising more generally.

They currently include:

  • Sitting on the Student Learning Taskforce, which has been charged with evaluating how FYS can better assist students who are less academically prepared for math and science courses at Notre Dame
  • Serving as the FYS liaison to academic departments in the life sciences as well as the preprofessional studies program so as to enhance communication with those units
  • Planning and organizing the ND Ignite initiative’s Den Dialogs, discussions of current events and issues led by faculty in their homes to encourage first-year students to participate in a lively exchange of ideas
  • Providing information and resources to first-year advisors and students on how students can develop networks, conduct informational interviews, and find experiences and internships that will assist in forming their visions for their futures
  • Teaching the Moreau First Year Experience course
