As a faculty member in the First Year of Studies (FYS), Wangensteen has a number of responsibilities beyond providing one-on-one advising to her students. These activities are meant to enhance the experience of Notre Dame undergraduates as well as the practice of academic advising more generally.

 

They currently include:

 

  • Serving as one of the primary points of contact for Notre Dame undocumented students, working closely with liaisons across campus to address issues of access, eligibility, and other matters in relation to academic programs and scholarly engagement

  • Serving on the Notre Dame Diversity and Inclusion Practitioner’s Group, led by Pamela Nolan Young.
  • Serving as a Spanish language resource for the Sara Bea Learning Center for Students with Disabilities and the CARE Case Managers.
  • Leadership and engagement in The Global Community for Academic Advising (NACADA), including being competitively selected into their Emerging Leader Program, building NACADA Clearinghouse web content for advisors working with DACA, Dreamer, undocumented, and immigrant students, and serving on Spanish translation and editing team.
  • Participanting in the Center for Social Concerns’ Border Issues Faculty Immersion Seminar. This unique experience combined scholarship, humanitarian field work, and community-based learning about the US-Mexico border near Nogales, Arizona.  ND News Feature
  • Participating in the biennial National Conference on Advising Highly Talented Undergraduates organized by FYS, she presented on “Advising Undocumented Students: From Awareness to Practice” and moderated a discussion group on “Best Practices for Supporting Economically Disadvantaged Students”
