Deacon Mel Tardy

Academic Advisor

Faculty Rank: Associate Professional Specialist

 

Deacon Mel Tardy is an academic advisor in the University of Notre Dame’s First Year of Studies (FYS) and holds the rank of associate professional specialist. He primarily advises students who intend to pursue a major in the Mendoza College of Business as well as members of the football and track & field teams.

 

Editor of the First Year of Studies monograph First Year Advising: A Compendium of Best Practices, Deacon Tardy has chaired the FYS Diversity Strategic Plan Committee and Diversity Working Group.

 

Outside of FYS, he is the faculty advisor to the Voices of Faith Gospel Choir, Perspectives (a student group focused on disabilities), and The Wabruda (a student group devoted to brotherhood amongst African Americans). Notre Dame’s Student Activities Office has twice named him Special Interest Faculty Advisor of the Year.

 

Deacon Tardy received a B.A. in studio art and an M.B.A. in international finance from Notre Dame. Ordained in 2011 by the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, he is the chaplain for the faculty and staff of FYS as well as the students in its Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars Program. He is also active in the local community, including at St. Augustine Parish, where he founded a youth ministry program in 2005 and continues to serve as its director today.
