On leave from 1 September 2015 to 31 August 2016.

I hold a Ph.D. in history of science and my research focuses on the role of scientists in public policy. In recent years my attention has centered on research integrity, science policy, and responsible communication.

I am currently a Science and Technology Policy Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). My placement is with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of the Science Advisor working with the Scientific Integrity and Human Subjects Research programs. My responsibilities include enhancing a culture of scientific integrity at EPA, developing and executing an education strategic plan, and performing an assessment and history of human subjects’ research and protections at EPA which will be used for regulatory reform.

Since 2011, I have been Assistant Director for Research at the John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values at the University of Notre Dame, which envisions ethics and policy in pace with science and technology. My duties include grant development and ethics education in responsible conduct of research and social responsibility. My colleagues and I have received two National Science Foundation awards to support ethical leadership training programs. I also offer professional development training in grant writing and communication skills to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Trained in writing creative nonfiction and biography, I use these techniques to engage general audiences.

Before Notre Dame, I spent five years teaching history of science courses to undergraduate students majoring primarily in the sciences and engineering. I am currently in an administration position at an academic institution and have previously held managerial and administrative positions in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors.
