Course Description: First of a two-course sequence that introduces methods of differential-equation solution together with common engineering applications in vibration analysis and controls. Includes second-order, linear differential equations, feedback control, single-degree of freedom vibrations, numerical solutions to systems of ordinary differential equations, and partial differential equations.

 

Up to now, this has been the hardest course I have ever taken in my academic career. There are not many "plug and chug" type problems. The professor, Dr. Goodwine, stressed the importance of higher level thinking and the course reflected it. Although the material was extremely difficult to wrap my mind around, Dr. Goodwine was able to give step-by-step straightforward proofs that made them easier to understand and he gave real life examples that also helped. There was great emphasis on numerical methods, the wave equation, and spring-damper systems.
