The First Year of Studies (FYS) serves as the academic home for all Notre Dame first-year undergraduates, regardless of their intended courses of study. Established in 1962, FYS aids in the transition to college life, pairing each student with one of approximately 20 full-time faculty advisors, who are available for individual advising sessions throughout the year and provide everything from academic support to innovative learning opportunities both in and outside the classroom.

First-year students at Notre Dame thus have the chance to become thoroughly familiar with the University and its many curricular options before they decide what college or school they will enter and which major(s) they will pursue. While certainly not the only factor, FYS plays a large part in Notre Dame’s nearly 100 percent retention rate from the first to sophomore year.
