Grant Proposal

For this interdisciplinary project with a focus on both music and literature, I applied to ISLA's UROP Research & Materials Grant.

The project proposes a research and analysis on contemporary Italian author Primo Levi, whose identity as a chemist, writer and witness of the Holocaust is a source of reflection and continues to impact scholarly interest on a global scale. A multimedia presentation will complete the study and include narrative, vocal and instrumental performances of American composer Simon Sargon’s “Shemà”, the U.S. premiere of Italian composer Ennio Morricone’s “Se questo è un uomo”, as well as personal testimonies by faculty and students who participated in the Fall 2015 course on Primo Levi’s literary works. The venue selected for the event, which will be held on Wednesday, April 28th at 3pm, is Jordan Hall of Science at the University of Notre Dame. The choice is not accidental as it wishes to highlight and foster the essential interrelation between Sciences and the Arts, in addition to render homage to the life of Primo Levi, whose profession as a chemist was an integral component of his works. The inter-disciplinary nature of this research will involve students and faculty in the Departments of Italian Studies and Music under the College of Arts & Letters as well as students in the College of Science.

My faculty recommender was Dr. Vittorio Montemaggi.
