- Levi music online catalogue

Project made possible thanks to funding by:

• Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts

• Notre Dame Department of Music

• Italian Studies at Notre Dame

• and venue by Notre Dame College of Science

On the project:

Over the last few years, Notre Dame has been developing significant resources for the study of Primo Levi and his work. Among these is the Primo Levi Collection, housed in the Department of Rare Books & Special Collections of the Hesburgh Libraries, one of the most important collections of Levi materials outside of Italy. Materials from the Collection are regularly used for both undergraduate and graduate classes. Having taken the class “Primo Levi: Language, Literature Friendship” taught by Vittorio Montemaggi in the Fall of 2015, I was struck byLevi’s literary style and content, particularly segments from his If This is a Man and The Periodic Table. I later became curious on the subject of classical compositions centered on Levi’s texts and initiated a project to create the first comprehensive catalogue of these compositions, to be added to the Primo Levi Collection in due course.

For the project's performance, I have selected from this catalogue two very different pieces by two significant contemporary composers. This occasion thus also offers a special opportunity to showcase 20th and 21st century classical music on Notre Dame’s campus, as these periods are rarely highlighted and performed by student musicians.

Most importantly, the interdisciplinary nature of this project allows for the collaboration among students in the Departments of Romance Languages and Literatures, Music, FTT, Sacred Music, as well as the College of Science. The project’s subject offers both the students and the audience an opportunity for enrichment in music, literature, the Italian language, through reflection on what it means to be human.
